South African adventurer and ocean advocate Chris Bertish is preparing for his most ambitious journey yet: the TransCat Expedition 2025 – Oceans Without Borders. In a world-first, Bertish aims to become the first person to sail a production beach catamaran solo and unsupported across the Pacific Ocean.
Launching from Dana Point, California, in late June, Bertish will navigate 2,800 nautical miles to Oahu, Hawaii, in a 20-foot semi-foiling beach catamaran—without a cabin, kitchen, or toilet. Powered entirely by wind and solar energy, the estimated 17- to 21-day journey will test endurance and highlight sustainable exploration.
“This expedition is not just about breaking records; it’s about inspiring change,” Bertish said. “When we protect our ocean, we protect all life on this planet.”
The initiative will fund a range of global impact projects, including:
- A circular economy classroom in Kenya (July–Nov 2025)
- Ocean education programs in South Africa
- Tree planting in North America and Africa
- Coral restoration in Hawaii
- Mobile marine education through partner NGOs
The expedition follows Bertish’s previous record-setting feats, including a 93-day solo paddle across the Atlantic and a 49-day wing-foil journey across the Pacific. Each mission has centered on environmental advocacy and giving back.
Quoting Sir David Attenborough, Bertish added: “When we save the ocean, we save the world.”
