Over the past 15 years, glass has transformed yacht design, shifting from fortress-like vessels to more transparent, ocean-connected yachts. The phrase “strengthens your connection to the ocean” now appears in many promotional materials, reflecting this change.
Feadship’s 78-meter Venus, launched in 2012 for Steve Jobs, is a key example of this shift. With its expansive windows and all-glass pavilion, Venus set a new standard for integrating glass into yacht design. “Venus demonstrated that glass can be both architectural and functional,” says Ralf Scheuer of sedak, a leading glass manufacturer.
Following Venus, large-format glass has become a hallmark of modern yachts. Sedak now supplies advanced glazing solutions like all-glass balustrades, infinity pools, and panoramic windows, designed to endure tough marine conditions. Ian Langham, from Eckersley O’Callaghan, notes that their experience with projects like Apple Park has allowed them to push the boundaries of glass technology for yachts.
Shipyards like Sanlorenzo have embraced these innovations, using next-generation laminated glass and high-strength frames. “Our goal is to maximize transparency while meeting strict safety standards,” says a Sanlorenzo spokesperson. The Sanlorenzo SX88, launched in 2017, was among the first to feature floor-to-ceiling windows, setting a new benchmark for yacht transparency.
However, rising demand for advanced glazing is creating challenges. Langham points out that the limited number of trusted manufacturers may create bottlenecks in production. Scheuer adds, “Handling glass up to 20 meters in length for superyachts requires precision and durability.”
To meet growing demand, companies like TILSE have expanded production, while Viraver Technology has invested in new equipment and increased shifts. CEO Marco Mazzarolo says, “We remain responsive and work to avoid bottlenecks.”
As the demand for advanced yacht glazing continues to grow, the industry faces challenges but remains committed to innovation.
