Dutch luxury yacht builder Heesen Yachts has successfully sold its 50-metre hybrid superyacht, Project Orion—marking a major step forward in sustainable marine innovation.
Constructed on speculation as a showcase of Heesen’s commitment to eco-conscious design, Project Orion is equipped with a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric propulsion system. This advanced technology allows the yacht to cruise at speeds up to 10 knots while consuming just 45 litres of fuel per hour—representing a 30% fuel savings compared to conventional diesel-powered motor yachts of similar size.
Heesen highlights that Orion’s hybrid capabilities enable nearly silent operation, with onboard noise levels in hybrid mode registering around 46 decibels—comparable to gentle rainfall. The vessel’s aluminium hull reduces overall weight, further enhancing fuel efficiency and performance.
“Orion is a testament to our unwavering commitment to advancing superyacht technology while seamlessly blending sustainability with luxury,” said Ruud van der Stroom, Heesen’s chief commercial officer. “With our innovative hybrid solutions, we are setting new standards in energy efficiency and delivering an unparalleled, serene cruising experience.”
Designed by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, the yacht features sleek lines, a near-vertical bow, and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. A shallow 2.15-metre draft—made possible by Van Oossanen’s optimized hull design—enables the vessel to navigate shallow cruising destinations such as the Bahamas and the Mediterranean coastline.
The interiors, conceived by Italian designer Cristiano Gatto, reflect a contemporary aesthetic with an emphasis on natural light and environmental responsibility. The layout includes a luxurious owner’s stateroom on the main deck, a full-beam VIP suite, and four additional guest cabins. Gatto has carefully chosen sustainable materials throughout the interior, reinforcing the yacht’s eco-friendly ethos.
Project Orion stands as a notable milestone for Heesen Yachts, reinforcing the company’s position at the forefront of the push toward greener, more responsible superyacht construction.
